MCareMD : What we treat

What is this?

A dermatitis or rash is, very simply, is a skin irritation that usually results in redness.  Contrary to popular belief, not all rashes are itchy and not all of them are raised or bumpy.  Depending on the exposure prior to the development of the rash, it can be flat, circular, painful, oozing, dry and scaly, or completely asymptomatic.  Rashes can be a result of an allergic reaction to the environment, medication, insects, bites, infections, foods, and many other allergens.  It can be a result of medical conditions such as psoriasis, eczema, autoimmune disorders, and more.  In other words, a rash can look like anything, can develop anywhere on the body, and can be due to many different things.

Can it be treated?

Treatment depends heavily on the reason for the rash.  Allergic dermatitis respond very well to steroids, but fungal dermatitis worsens with steroids.  A rash due to medication allergy works best after the offending agent is removed while a rash from shingles needs time and supportive care.
