MCareMD : What we treat

What is this?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections passed from one person to another via contact usually sexual in nature.  There are instances, however, when the contact is not considered sexual and yet transmission still occurs (i.e. a needle stick or benign touch of an infected sore).  Both men and women are vulnerable to more than 20 types of STDs.  The causes of STDs are attributed to certain bacteria, viruses, yeast and parasites.  Among the most frequently treated are:

1. Chlamydia

2. Gonorrhea

3. Herpes Simplex 2

4. HIV

5. Syphilis

6. Hepatitis

What are the symptoms?

STD’s have a wide range of symptoms including painful genital sores, liver disease, rash, and cancer.  They depend on the organism which caused the infection and the condition and sex of the patient.  For instance, patients who already have chronic conditions or are not in the peak of health may experience more severe symptoms than their healthy counterpart.  Also, women tend to get more severe symptoms than men on the whole.  For instance, some strains of the Human Papilloma Virus may cause cervical cancer in women and no symptoms at all in men.

Can it be treated?

Again, it depends.  There are no medications which can cure viral STDs, although there are some techniques which can sometimes prove curative – the LEEP procedure in very early cervical dysplasia, for instance.  However, there are some antimicrobials which can either cure or contain an STD caused by other organisms.  Correct usage of latex condoms greatly reduces, but does not completely eliminate, the risk of catching or spreading STDs.

How can MCare M.D. help?

If you think you have an STD (burning urination, discharge, or pelvic discomfort after sex), don’t be afraid to tell us everything during your meeting with your MCare M.D. Doctor.  Be prepared to tell us when, where, with whom, color, odor…everything.  Knowing everything helps us help you.  And don’t worry.  Everything you tell us is completely confidential.  If the doctor thinks that you have an infection that can be treated with prescription medication he or she will send an order to the pharmacy of your choice instantly.
